The Big Reveal

Okay, so there's a little more organizing left to do but hey, it's a BIG improvement compared to the before.

Here's Mike's area from the door:
And my area from the door:
And my area from Mike's corner:

It isn't quite the oh-so-pretty work/craft room I had in mind but again, it's a huge improvement.

Update on my "To Do" list

  • refinish Poppop's chair
  • make sunflower pillow (like this one) for the living room couch. My artistic painting skills aren't that great so we'll see how that turns out. (DONE)
  • make a cake stand like this one - such a fun and brilliant idea and yay for saving $$! (debating doing this one quite yet - we just don't have room to store it)
  • refinish this table (Not sure I'm going to anymore - it looks great as it is)
  • paint the basement room floor (DONE)
  • finish a scrap book for my my Mom's and my two week trip to Paris/England/Ireland in 2004 (yep, that far behind...) (DONE)
  • finish scrap booking our road trip from the summer (DONE)
  • make a "snuggie" for Mike (will be done so - I'm going to buy a real Snuggie because it's less than half the price of buying the fabric to make one) (DONE)
  • make a bath robe for Mike
  • make a sign with our last name & "Est. 2007" on it to hang in our little entry. I've been meaning to order one but, due to my indecisiveness, can't figure out exactly what I want it to look like so I'm doing it myself. That way if I don't like it, I have only myself to blame. :-) (DONE - see the sign here)
  • make a new headboard for the KING SIZE mattress we bought yesterday
  • make a bedskirt for same said bed (DONE - Thanks, Mom!)
  • make a curtain for our bathroom window (don't worry, the window is actually a bunch of glass tiles but it needs something to soften it up a little)

A Wonderful LONG Weekend

Mike and I were busy organizing our new room. It's not done yet but it's getting there. I don't know where I got it in my head that because we'd have a nice "new" room to put things in, we could still fit the same amount of space but have it more organized. Not quite the case but it looks prettier! :-)

We also got flowers for the deck and I have 7 tomatoes on my plants! Yay!

Day 4 and Thankful Thursdays

They'll be done tomorrow! They have to spray the ceiling, put a second coat of stain on the trim, and put the baseboards down. Yahoo!

Today I'm thankful for:
  • the surprise rain we got this afternoon
  • the basement almost being done and getting to put my house back in order soon
  • the three day weekend ahead
  • the three tomatoes I have growing on one of my plants (this is a big accomplishment for me) :-)

Days 2 & 3 With the Contractors

I'm a little bummed - the contractors said it would take 3-5 days to finish the basement room and it's going to take the full 5 days. I'm ready to paint the room and more importantly, I'm about to go nuts because I'm so ready to have our house back in order. But, patience is a virtue so here's the room after day 2:

And after day 3:
And here's our house with all of our bushes in bloom. I don't know what the bushes by the door with the white flowers are but they smell heavenly.
On a completely unrelated note - I think this is such a fun idea (but don't think I'd be willing to shell out $100 for): http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/inspiration/custom-made-stamps-to-remember-the-first-days-117814

Day 1 With the Contractors

The contractors are done with day 1 - I'm amazed at how quickly they work!

There are a few places that the paint I just put down on the floor came up because of the wood they had in there - I didn't think the paint would come up that easily or I would have waited to paint. Oh well, I can touch up or just might leave it be for some character. We'll see.

Two more days until I can paint!

Day Something...

The contractors start on the basement room tomorrow. I'm so excited to have the room done and everything back in order that I can hardly stand it. In the mean time, our house is covered in plastic.
Now to enjoy the last of the weekend and watch the best of country celebrate one of the best - Brooks & Dunn.

Oh, and we're going to Europe this fall!

In Two Weeks

Whew, we had a long but good weekend. Friday and most of Saturday were spent getting ready for a baby shower I hosted for a friend. I only got one picture during the shower and that was of the food...
Moving on to the title of this post - we're finishing the last room in our basement. Here's a before shot. Yikes!
Here's the basement bedroom filled with some of the stuff we had to move out of the room in preparation for painting the floor this week and the contractors to dry wall, etc. next week.
Another shot of the basement and the temporary home for the rest of the stuff...
The empty room! The wet spots are from us mopping to get ready to paint the floor. We're going to use the room as a work/craft/storage room and decided not to carpet the room for the time being. I cannot wait for it to be done, to have the house back in order, and have an awesome room to decorate and play in!

A Perfect Day

You know those days where you're just at peace? Today was one of those days.

We slept in (if 7:30 is considered sleeping in), ate breakfast on the deck, Mike took care of mowing the yard and washing the cars and I cleaned the house with the windows open. We ran errands, we watched the Cardinals win and took a nap, had steak for dinner, went out for ice cream and then just relaxed.

It was simple, but it was great and exactly what I needed. (Thanks, God!)

"Established" Sign

I can officially cross out a project on my project list! I'm very happy with the way it turned out - it's not perfect but I made it!

It's hanging on the wall in our entry now!

The Unfinished Room

Our unfinished basement room is aching to be finished. Well, more like I'm aching to finish it. :-)

We use the room for storage right now and after a few months, a tornado looks like it hit the room so I really want to get it finished so it can serve as something other than a "dumping ground".

Here are the plans:

I want to paint the floors with a checker board pattern. I thought I wanted to do black and white but the more I think about it the more I think a grey and cream would work better with the rest of the basement. Once that's done, we'll find a rug to warm the room up a little

Two of the walls will be the khaki that's in our bedroom and the extra bedroom in the basement, one will be red just because I like the color, and the fourth will be a chalkboard wall (or at least a good portion of one of the walls).

From there, we'll move Mike's computer desk and other computer stuff out of the alcove in the main part of the basement so he can have a room to play and work with all of that stuff and I'll set up a little table and area for my scrapbooking/crafts. The best part is, we won't have to clean up when we're in the middle of something like we do now- we'll just close the door!

We'll also keep the closet area as our storage area. I want to build a bunch of shelving in there to help keep things organized.

Now to paint the floors, frame and drywall the walls, build shelves, paint and move everything in!

MORE House Stuff

I'm sure ya'll are tired of seeing stuff about our house but I have so much fun making our house a home and this is my way of documenting everything we've done. (So thanks for hanging in there with me!) :-)

My sweet Mom was walking up our basement stairs the other night and we heard a big crash. When my Dad and I ran upstairs we found the floater frame that used to hold this picture on the ground in three pieces so I ran out yesterday to get a new, sturdier version of the floater frame.
When I was out getting the new frame, I saw three aisles of home decor stuff on clearance at Hobby Lobby and this little wire basket was perfect for on top of the toilet. $3 is hard to beat.
My next little project is to find frames to hang above our side tables in the bedroom since we hardly have anything on the walls in there. The catch with that is that I wanted to move the lamps to the outside of the table but Mike found a great solution! (see below)

See that little white box thing? It's a switch on the end of an extension cord so those "hard to reach" switches are a little more accessible. Mike only got one so we could make sure it would work but it does so we'll get another one and then we'll stick them onto the back of our side tables so we can easily turn on/off the lamps next to the bed. I know it sounds lazy but when the temperature outside is in the single digits the last thing you want to do is get halfway out of bed so you can turn the lamp off. :-)
My parents stayed at our house on their way to and from Texas last week and they brought this mirror back from Poppop's house. I asked Mom what she was going to do with the mirror and she asked if I wanted it. Of course, if it came from a family member's house then I love having it around and since she didn't have plans for it other than to keep it, I got to keep it. (my grandpa found the actual mirror and asked a guy to frame it, when he went to pick it up the guy had chipped around the mirror to make it fit the frame rather than make a new frame to fit the mirror and because of that story, my Mom wanted to keep the mirror)

Now I need to figure out where I'm going to hang it!

I'm working on another post to show you my plans for our unfinished basement room. I'm VERY excited about it!

(the post below is new, too, by the way)

The Nester's Tour of Homes

Christmas Tour of Homes with The Nester

Yay! I can't tell ya'll how excited I am to see everyone's Christmas decorations!

In the mean time, welcome to our home!

I took this picture a few nights ago - it looks like it was snowing but it wasn't even close. I guess I need to clean the lens on my camera! :-)

Here's the house lit up with our outside lights. We have candle lights in every window - I love the way it looks. We're going to put more lights up next year, we realized this year that we needed a little more outside.

Our Christmas wreath on the front door.
Our mantel - I don't light the candles very often but it looks so pretty when I do.

Our tree all lit up! I still love how well my tree skirt turned out.
Some of our Christmas ornaments - the pineapple my Dad and brothers brought us from Colonial Williamsburg; the Swarovski tree, holly, and snowflake some family friends gave us as a wedding gift; the ornament we got in Hawaii on our Honeymoon; the fishing moose from our road trip to Grand Teton Nat'l Park and beyond; one from NYC that friends sent us after we couldn't find one when we were there (in June); and every Texas girl needs a cowboy boot on her tree! :-) Mike and I try to get a Christmas ornament wherever we travel - it makes for wonderful memories and lots of fun when we pick them out together.

The platter on the bar next to the tree - a dear friend gave it to us as a wedding gift and it makes me smile every time I look at it.
A poinsettia (99 cents from Lowes on Black Friday - my only purchase that day) on the table next to the couch with an angel figurine that Mike's Mom gave me the first Christmas we were married.
The shelves above the couch.

The bell that hangs from the chandelier over the dining room. I took the picture before I added the poinsettia to the center of the table and to the corner shelf.

A snowflake candle holder in the guest bathroom.
We also have glass balls and tons of berry picks all over the house in random places. I've seen several tutorials online for these magazine Christmas trees so I made a few the other day - they're very cute!

We do have a little tree in our basement. My grandparents gave me $20 before I went back to school at Thanksgiving my senior year of college. I lived in an apartment style dorm that year and knew we needed a little tree (even if it only had lights and a ribbon tree topper). My Mom added the lantern lights to the tree a few years ago when they had the tree up in their basement.

That's it! I can't wait to see everyone's decorations and get ideas for next year!

Have a very blessed and Merry Christmas!

Bathroom Blahs

Our bathroom is pretty straightforward - bath, shower, sinks, toilet. We painted the bathroom after we moved in but I hadn't found anything that I liked to hang on the walls that wouldn't be impacted by the steam.

Today, I think I finally found the right thing! Hobby Lobby's wall decor was 50% off and I saw two "ceiling tiles" that I thought would work.

I'm not sure the brown is the right color but it does tie in to the comforter we have on our bed. I figured the worst thing that could happen is I end up repainting them to the right color but for the time being, I'm glad there's something on the wall. I want to get a basket to put on the back of the toilet for extra rolls of toilet paper or something - we'll see.

A Very Happy Thanksgiving

Our house is SO quiet now. My brothers were here for a week and my parents had been here since Wednesday but they all left this morning and Mike and I are relaxing and trying to get over the sniffles that we have before we go back to work tomorrow.

We had a wonderful week with our family here. Between the food and the Wii my parents brought with them, family pictures, seeing friends, and just enjoying each other's company - we had a blast.

Here are pictures of the highlights! (I can't get any of the pictures to rotate for some reason - sorry!)

The new candle holder my parents brought us from Chicago.

Breakfast on Thanksgiving morning - pumpkin bread!

The centerpiece on the table.

Ready for Thanksgiving dinner.

My parents and I got up at 5:30 on Black Friday to get 99 cent poinsettias at Lowe's. (that otherwise would have been between 4 & 8 dollars each depending on where we got them) We got 18 between our homes. Yep, we're funny like that.

The wreath I decorated for our front door.

We got our Christmas card from Aspen Boutique this weekend too!

And finally - a little late but here are the flowers Mike got me for our anniversary. :-)
